How we met... The internet.

We wanted to share our story because... I want to share our story because we are living proof that you can find love on the internet!

How he proposed... After throwing me off for weeks/months/years, he took me to look at Christmas lights in Simcoe. Since it was a somewhat warm winter and there was no snow yet, we walked around for hours. We covered the entire park until we stopped on a bridge just before getting back in the car. He planted his feet and wouldn't move as this family and their kids went running by saying "oh wow, look at that!" He was quiet all of a sudden and I told him that I was having a good time. He said "You are? That's good because I had an ulterior motive." I looked at him as he turned, got down on his knee, struggled to get the box out of his pocket and then asked me to marry him. I stood there looking at him, soaking up the moment. Soon tears were coming down my cheeks, a huge smile was on my face and I said "Yes. Yes. Oh my god! Are you sure? Oh wow!" We kissed and hugged and the whole time I had happy tears. It was a really special moment.

How we feel about our upcoming married life... I'm feeling really good about our life together. Things have been changing over the past few months and the wedding planning has been put on hold for a few weeks as we plan to move.

Our dream wedding could be described as... I've had so many ideas for my dream wedding - but the main thing will be having James at the end of the aisle looking at me and smiling.

Our colour/theme: The only colour that has been cemented is chocolate brown/espresso. My bridesmaids are wearing espresso, and James would like the boys all to wear brown too. We are thinking of having burnt orange and warm fall colours be our accent colours.

planning

So far (by February 4, 2007) we've planned... So far, we have picked the date - September 29, 2007. We also have chosen a location in my parents back yard. They live just outside Cambridge and have a large yard. We plan on having the wedding and a tent reception in the back yard. I have selected and ordered my dress and so have my bridesmaids. And I suppose before anything, we had a DJ selected, as my brother and his best friend have been doing it as a hobby for years.

Our biggest concern right now is... Not being able to get a well priced photographer or a good caterer. We are currently moving and have had to focus all of our energy on that. The wedding planning has stalled and the longer we wait, the less options we will have.

Chapter one diary entry... Within a few weeks of dating, I knew that James was the man I was going to marry. I saw a fall wedding and a happy ending. Now here it is nearly four years later and I'm having that happen! James is a pretty stubborn guy and has really laid out some ideas and opinions regarding our wedding. In a way, this has been a good thing because I have so many ideas that it's been difficult narrowing things down! We are still early in the planning, but there is a lot to get done. It's going to be a very busy 7 1/2 months!

bridal diary: may 8, 2007

How we're feeling... Things with the wedding have been going really quickly at some times, and then really slowly at others. James has been a real change compared to most grooms. He has opinions - really creative ones and is really enjoying sharing his ideas to make our wedding unique. We've been trying to work together to try and make sure that this wedding is the wedding we want. My dress has just come in and I'm really looking forward to trying it on! It's made the wedding seem so real and so close.

The groom surprised me by... After his car broke down last week I had to drive him around all weekend. Last night as we went to go pick up his car he decided to swerve in to get me some ice cream. It was a sweet surprise that I needed.

What's going on with my bridal party... My maid of honour has been incredibly supportive with regards to the wedding. She's been helping give us ideas for centre pieces, which seem to be the one thing we cannot find just the right thing for! My best friend Devon has also been awesome throughout this whole process. Her excitement bubbles over whenever I tell her anything and she's been so great helping me with anything I need. It's been awesome having her involved. The boys, well they are pretty much AWOL and so is my other bridesmaid. Not much for them to do right now - but as long as they come through in a pinch - I know we'll be okay.

What happened this week that was awesome!... I just found out that I'm going to be getting a raise and a bonus system attached to it. That's awesome news and will definitely make our goal of getting a house that much closer.

Planning pet peeves lately... Okay, I'll admit - my groom is great at ideas but not so great at getting things done. I'm getting a little frustrated at the lack of progress on his end of the wedding planning.

Our budgeting issues this week/day/month... James' car broke down and needed repairs and that was very frustrating. Money that could've went towards the wedding had to be held off because it was needed to fix the car. At least now we know he'll be driving safely. We've also realized that we have different views regarding the money. I think of spending huge amounts close to the wedding is going to really hurt - and he thinks that he can save more money and gain interest by paying things later rather than now.

And the hunt continues... Have: photographer (yeah to my FMIL!), caterer, tent rented, tables rented, dj booked, minister, dresses ordered (and in!!!). Need: boys need tux fittings, florist needs to be confirmed (had a preliminary meeting), dresses need to be altered, passports need to be booked and so has the honeymoon, invitations.

Advice for out brides out there... It's amazing how many people are willing to give you advice! The thing to remember is that this is your wedding - and at the end of the day, you are the one that has to be happy with it. Believe in yourself and believe in your vision - and you'll be alright.

bridal diary: august 20, 2007

How we're feeling... The wedding plans are fast and furious now. We've booked all of our vendors - which is great and now it's just finalizing everything. As we are having an outdoor tent wedding in late September, we are looking at options for heating in case it gets cold at night and are working on decorating. We are both really excited for everything to come together so that we can finally get hitched!

What's going on with my bridal party... I just had a shower this past weekend and it was a lot of fun. My bridesmaids knew that I was a little disappointed that I didn't stand out too much at our buck and doe, so they went and made me wear a tiara and carry a special wand. My bridesmaids had a blast making me look silly and it was a lot of fun. We are all going tomorrow to get our dresses altered - and I cannot wait to get my dress on again! As for the groomsmen - they are busy planning a really fun bachelor party for James. Like the bridesmaids, the boys were a huge help with the stag and doe and I'm glad that now they can go out and party rather than work all night. I'm a little frustrated with the lack of going to get tuxes fitted, but I know that it will happen soon. (You hear that boys - get cracking!)

What happened this week that was frustrating... Our landlord told us that she cannot afford the house anymore and put it on the market. Now our lives have been disrupted by showings and open houses. It makes it really hard to dive into wedding stuff when you are being forced to clean it up right after.

What happened this week that was awesome!... We had a great shower! My sisters and my mother organized a family shower for me and we had about 25 (or more) people come down from way out East and way up North to celebrate me. The food was fabulous, the games were fun and it was really good to see everyone again.

Planning pet peeves lately... Groomsmen lack of tux fittings. Argh!

Our budgeting issues this week/day/month... The honeymoon. Even though we raised a whopping amount at our stag and doe, it may not be enough for the full honeymoon we wanted. We were going to go to Boston for 5 days and then with a one night stop over on the way down and the way back. I think we might just cut it down to 3 days instead so that we can still experience what we had originally set out to do.

Advice for out brides out there... People have never been as nice to me as they have been throughout this entire process. It truly goes to show just how loved I really am and I appreciate it.

bridal diary: september 5, 2007

How we're feeling... Things are going full speed ahead now! With less than 30 days we are starting to get really anxious to have the party started! Both of us keep looking at each other and getting giddy - even though we are both really starting to feel the time pinch for all that we want to do.

The groom surprised me by... My soon-to-be husband booked our honeymoon last night. Always a touch frugal - he worked out a deal on our hotels. We got an amazing price - so now he's talking about taking me for a really fancy dinner - which we weren't sure would fit the budget until now. His words, "I really want to have a nice honeymoon but if we can do it a little cheaper, all the better."

What's going on with my bridal party... The wedding party is excitedly planning the bachelor party and the bachelorette. Other than two groomsman that have been slacking on their tux fitting duty (gah! less than 30 days and they are both over 6'5"!), everyone has been really helpful.

What happened this week that was frustrating... The last day for our reply cards came and went with five guests not confirming in time. We gave them a few days and then finally asked questions and found out that three of them are coming and two of them aren't. Strangely enough - this gives us an even 100.

What happened this week that was awesome!... This week we got so much done! We've never been able to devote an entire day to the wedding and this week we were finally able to. Saturday we went to mutual ground and mapped out our day. Even somehow fitted in some laundry before changing the flowers (again) and working on centrepieces. It was awesome.

Planning pet peeves lately... Our complete inability to agree on a first dance song. We have a few that will work and at this point I'm ready to just go with whatever he decides. I've laid out my ground rules about the tone of the song and the song words and here's hoping he can stick to it!

Our budgeting issues this week/day/month... Our biggest budgeting issue was that James was laid off at the beginning of the summer. He couldn't find anything other than the occasional freelance project. But that should all be behind us as he started a new job yesterday!

And the hunt continues... All of our vendors have been hired - now it is a matter of confirming everything and paying for everything.

Advice for out brides out there... Everyone keeps telling me that things will all work out - oddly - I believe them!

How we met... We met in high school!! We've been together ever since.

We wanted to share our story because... To show that high school romances can last and that you can plan a wedding that is meaningful and truly represents you as a couple.

How he proposed... It was my birthday and I was deathly ill. Nigel had planned to take me to the Squamish Valley for a night in a rustic cabin. I had just worked 29 days in a row and was completely exhausted. I couldn't bare the thought of staying another moment in Vancouver. However, on my actual birthday, Nigel had to register for his courses at school so we had to wait around at home until after 1pm when he could register. I was a bit disappointed as I wanted to leave right away, but there was nothing I could do. Once he was done, we headed out of the city. I had no idea where he had planned for us to go - just that it was somewhere cool. When I got there, I was so happy! It was perfect. No noise, just the sound of the river and the wind through the trees. Since it was rather late, we went out for dinner and then came back and enjoyed the hot tub on the property. I was hoping that something was going to happen - so I was a little surprised when I didn't receive the gift I had hoped for on my actual birthday. The next day we woke up, and went for breakfast. Still really sick, our plans to go on a large hike had to be canceled, so we opted to drive around fire roads through the mountains. At one spot, he pulled over and asked if I wanted a snack. We sat by the river with a panorama view of gorgeous mountains. I knew that something was up, when he was very quiet... I was even getting nervous! He then asked me if I wanted my real birthday present and handed me a beautiful poem, and a box. I opened the box right away to find a sapphire and diamond ring - designed by him! It was perfect!!

How we feel about our upcoming married life... We've been together for 8 years already. We've grown together and as individuals. I know that our life together will be full of obstacles and great times. I am looking forward to moving into our 'adult' life!

Our dream wedding could be described as... Something that reflects who we are!

Our colour/theme: fall - black and white/cream will be the prominent colours - fall accents will highlight everything.

planning

So far (by May 8, 2007) we've planned... Pretty much everything! We have our reception/ceremony site, officiant, and caterer. Our DJ is my brother's friend and our photographer is Nigel's friend from Peterborough. Instead of getting a limo, our friend, who is an automotive journalist, will get a vehicle to drive us around in.

Our biggest concern right now is... Making sure EVERYONE has a great time!

bridal diary: september 1, 2007

How we're feeling... Well - we just booked our honeymoon!! That is super exciting! We are going to be staying in Tofino, BC for a few nights. We just had a crazy week of wedding planning when we were back in Ontario - FH and I are pretty much wedding'd out. We just want it to get here NOW!

The groom surprised me by... He's just been great all around. He's become a bit of a groomzilla. I can't really make a direct decision without his consent! However, this wedding is going to be a true reflection of us!

What's going on with my bridal party... My MOH has been wonderful. While we were back in Ontario she stayed with me for a few nights and attended my bachelorette party and shower. It was amazing to see her again! The guys are great, too. We are blessed with amazing friends who are willing to go above and beyond to help us out!

What happened this week that was frustrating... Frustrations... I guess it would be family communication. It is getting hard to really talk and finalize things with people when we live 4000 km away. Phone and email just don't do it sometimes.

What happened this week that was awesome!... Finding and booking our weekend getaway in November! We didn't think we could go away for money reasons...but we decided it was important to have something to look forward to after the wedding.

Planning pet peeves lately... Apathy and procrastination... I can say what we need to do... but doing it is hard.

Our budgeting issues this week/day/month... Ugh... budget? What budget? Right now it is spend what we need to spend to figure everything out!

And the hunt continues... Nothing... vendors are all accounted for!

How we met... On the internet.

We wanted to share our story because... I wanted to tell my wedding story, because I am a 44 year old woman and I wanted to let everyone know that love does truly find a way at any age.

How he proposed... Rob and I decided to go for a walk to see the new place that we were going to be moving into. We had already picked the ring together, but it was taking quite a long time to come in and as usual I was getting impatient. When the conversation came around to the ring, I mentioned to Rob that maybe he should call them "they may have forgot to order it" I said. Rob said that the sales person said that it could take up to three months to come in. I got upset and said no she didn't maybe two months is what she said. Rob started to pull something out of his pocket wrapped in a Kleenex and smiled saying "that's not what she told me when I picked it up today" Will you Marry me. Needless to say I screamed, cried and said yes and we are to be married on June 2/07.

How we feel about our upcoming married life... I am so excited. I have waited a long time to find the right man. Rob is truly my soul mate. He is the most patient understanding and loveable man I have ever met. Everyday seems like a new adventure and he lets me know that he loves me everyday by his actions and words. I am a very lucky girl.

Our dream wedding could be described as... Our wedding is traditional yet modern. I have a beautiful white wedding dress and Rob is going to be in a very elegant tuxedo. I have 4 adult bridesmaids 2 junior bridesmaids, a matron of honour and a flower girl. Rob has 4 adult groomsman and a best man. We are so excited that both our parents are here to share this incredible day with us. My father is 82 and he is going to walk me down the aisle. My mother is 80 and she is going to take part in the unity candle ceremony. We are getting married at a Chapel and the reception is at the Uk Club Hall.

Our colour/theme: My bridesmaids are in coral. My maid of honour is in purple and the little ones are in purple/white. The men are wearing black tux's with white shirts and ties to match the girls. Rob is wearing a pair of grey black (pinstripe) tux with white shirt and black tie, jacket is dark grey.

planning

So far (by May 8, 2007) we've planned... Everything is done now. The first thing we did was book the hall, I got my dress and then we booked the chapel. We booked the food next and the rest fell into place.

Our biggest concern right now is... My biggest concern is the weather. I really want it to be a nice day. We can't control that so we just hope that people have a good time. We hope that the food is great and that we really get to enjoy the day.

bridal diary: may 8, 2007

How we're feeling... Well it is just 3 weeks and a few days away. Rob and I went to see the DJ tonight and we gave him our song choices etc. We had a wedding shower (couples wine and cheese) on Sunday and it was do much fun. It was a gift certificate shower and we received almost $1,000 in gift certificates. People purchased them from CT, Sears, Bay etc. I am having my makeup trial tomorrow and my dress fitting next week. Rob is so sweet, he has been working on getting the music onto a CD for the DJ.

The groom surprised me by... When Rob was putting our music on CD, we played our first dance song Dido's The Closer You Get. I saw tears in his eyes when that was playing and he said he can't wait to look into my eyes and dance to it.

What's going on with my bridal party... The girl's bridesmaids dresses came in and there are alterations to be done. I picked out some material to make the girls' shawls.

What happened this week that was frustrating... The frustrating thing that happened is that everyone has an opinion about how things should go. For example who should be in the limo etc.

What happened this week that was awesome!... We had the amazing wine and cheese and Rob's project is going great. We also have been invited for a dinner party celebrating our wedding to the house of the Vice President of Finance at Rob's company.

Planning pet peeves lately... Replies for the wedding. Why can't people get their replies in on time.

Our budgeting issues this week/day/month... No major issues this month. We have to work buying some food (trays) into the budget so that people can have a nibble at the hall during cocktail hour.

And the hunt continues... All vendors are hired and confirmed. I talked Rob into having chair covers on all the chairs at the hall. We were originally going to have them at the head tables only.

Advice for out brides out there... That I can't wait for our wedding day. I know that there is a lot of planning and money that goes into this, but I can't wait to see it all come together on June 2/07.

bridal diary: june 11, 2007

How we're feeling... We are married the wedding went off without a hitch and we just returned from a week in Panama. That was our paradise.

The groom surprised me by... Rob is amazing. He was so wonderful every single day. Everyday I am reminded of why I fell in love with him!

What's going on with my bridal party... The bridesmaids/ushers were fab. They even went into the fountain for some amazing pics. Who knows what was in those fountains? LOL

What happened this week that was frustrating... Just that we found Paradise. After being up for 32 hours straight, we arrived at our destination and were completely overwhelmed with the beauty and tranquility of our resort, pics to follow!

What happened this week that was awesome!... We came home and opened lots of unbelievable presents and money cards. Everyone was so generous.

Planning pet peeves lately... Just that 14 people didn't show and only 2 called and sent a gift. That is really maddening as we are not only paying for dinner, but also chair covers and linen for those tables.

Our budgeting issues this week/day/month... We came in $2000 under budget and we managed to bring home $300 US spending from our Honeymoon.

And the hunt continues... We are now looking at buying a new car and we hopefully will be looking for a house next year.

Advice for out brides out there... Just enjoy the day. Don't stress out because it is true, EVERY bride looks beautiful on their wedding day.

The Wedding Story

our big day: June 2, 2007

The week of the wedding...

I started having a terrible sore throat and was at the doctor's on the Thursday to get a prescription for antibiotics and cough medicine. By Friday I was told not to speak.

I was freaking out before the wedding about...
The woman who was making the wedding cake's husband ended up in the hospital in serious condition and they weren't sure if he would make it. Needless to say, I felt sorry for her, but felt like a bridezilla because I was also worried about the wedding cake. Also, the day before the wedding, the chair covers arrived and I hadn't ordered enough and because I wasn't there the supplier would not leave the rest or bill me later for them. Luckily, the woman who runs the UK Club paid it for us so that we had the correct number of chair covers at our tables.

I was cool as a cucumber because...
I found out about the chair cover incident about 10:00 pm and I was cool because there was nothing I could do. Rob says the wedding plans are never completed they are just stopped because you can never complete them.

The wedding rehearsal story...
One of our ushers (the one coming from Cornwall) did not arrive in time for the rehearsal. He kept calling the cell phone and I was getting very stressed but then Rob made me leave the phone in the car (or I should say, he hid the phone in the car.)

Getting ready, the morning of the wedding...
It was actually quite relaxed. My hair appointment went great and all of the bridesmaids were at the house on time. I really got emotional when my 82-year-old father saw me in my dress for the first time. We all cried - my parents paid for the dress, but my father didn't want to see it till the wedding day.

Our people (bridesmaids, Moms, groomsmen, etc.) were...
We really had a great wedding party. On the wedding day, we were so hot so I decided that we should all have some pictures taken in the fountain at Rockway Gardens. You never know what is in there! I talked the girls into it first and the photographer started taking pictures and we were all having so much fun. It really cooled us off, too. I asked Rob and the rest of the guys to do it and they didn't want to at all. But, bit by bit, each usher took their socks and shoes off and went in. Finally, when Rob's best man and brother Paul finally gave in, Rob did too. They are some of the best pictures ever.

My thoughts before the ceremony...
When I got to the chapel I was really nervous. I couldn't find a good place to put my vows, so I ended sticking them down my top. LOL

The ceremony was...
Perfect. The minister mixed a lot of joy and laughter into it and we felt really relaxed. My friend Byron and some of his friends played live music, and when we were signing the register, he sang a song that he wrote for us called 'Let Love Lead'... It was beautiful and there wasn't a dry eye anywhere!

The photoshoot was...
Long and hot, but we got most of the shots that we wanted. Some of my family didn't show up at the park which was very disappointing, but I got the family pictures I wanted at the hall.

The reception looked...
The hall was decorated beautifully and we achieved our goal of covering up the disco ball in the centre of the dance floor.

The speeches were...
Great. My father wrote a poem and Rob's dad's speech was heartfelt. My sister's was funny and also heartfelt and Rob's brother's was amazing. He really touched me with the words he said about Rob and I.

The reception was...
We partied until 12:00 am, at which point we had our last song 'Dance Us to the End of Love' by Leonard Cohen - and everyone joined hands in a circle to bid us farewell. It was lovely!

A few things went wrong...
When we returned from our honeymoon, I found out that Paul (BM) had lost the bag that had the marriage license in it. Apparently he forgot to bring it from the chapel to the hall. However - just before he was about to break down and tell us about it, someone in my family told him to check the gift table (it was in a gift bag.) So as we were leaving, he casually came out with the bag and said, "Here is your license, you might need this." We knew nothing about all of this until later when the family came clean. I would have freaked, because we needed it to prove we were honeymooners at the resort. There they photocopied it and then upgraded us to the honeymoon suite.

A few things made us laugh...
The girls decided that when the time came for the toast, they would smile with fake teeth that looked like Austin Powers' horrible teeth. It was hilarious.

My bridal gown, hair and make-up was...
Beautiful. Everyone said that I looked stunning. The most important part was that my dad said I looked like a princess. Rob loved all of it, too.

The groom looked...
Very dashing with his tux and tails. He was smiling the whole time and he didn't seem nervous at all (although I was told by many that he was.)

Overall the day was...
Fantastic. It was my dreams fulfilled from when I was a child playing with Wedding Barbie and hoping someday my prince would come. It took a long time to find Rob, my husband, but I thank God everyday for making him send me that smile online. I truly felt like a Princess and that I married my soulmate and Prince Charming (or I should say Prince John Robert Duncan.)

We wanted to share our story because... Getting married is a long process! Most of us haven't done this before... so my trials and tribulations might help out a few other brides-to-be!

How he proposed... We had just moved into our apartment a few weeks back. It was May 24 weekend, and he made me breakfast in bed, and then at the end he proposed in bed! It was so sweet!

How we feel about our upcoming married life... I'm sooo excited! All the planning is fun, and I'm really enjoying our life together.

Our dream wedding could be described as... Bright colours, lots of family and friends, having the times of our lives!

Our colour/theme: Since it is at the end of the summer, we have decided on bright summer colours. Bright blue, green, yellow, orange... etc.!

planning

So far (by August 29, 2007) we've planned... So far we have the hall, the church, the caterer, the photographer and DJ booked! We also have my dress, my bridesmaid dresses, centerpieces, wedding favours, invitations (well, we still need to actually make them!) picked out! So far so good!

Our biggest concern right now is... That we'll run out of money... it's so easy to do!

bridal diary: november 8, 2007

How we're feeling... Right now it is pretty crazy in our world! Jason and I just bought a house, and the closing date was October 31st! The good thing is that we have our apartment until the end of November, so the past week has been renovating time! This month is going to go by too quickly, and our marriage prep courses start on November 20th (Catholic wedding).

What's going on with my bridal party... All the dresses have been ordered (thank god), so not much else is going on with that! The only problem I have right now is that my bridal party is dragging their butts on finding a hall for the stag and doe. I offered to plan it myself, but I was quickly told that I have no business in planning my own Stag and Doe. Sigh... this is going to be hard!

Planning pet peeves lately... Why are limousine services sooo expensive?????? Honestly! I can rent the same limo for an evening out for $600, but as soon as they find out its for a wedding, it skyrockets to $1200. So ridiculous. So we have decided to skip the limo!

Our budgeting issues this week/day/month... Since we bought a house, our budget is even tighter than before! Now when we want to spend money on the house/wedding, we need to see what it will affect (i.e.. we need new carpet in the house, but then we won't have any money to pay our decorator). Its been a tug-of-war between the house and the wedding.

And the hunt continues... Everyone that we need is hired, except for the flowers. However, I really think we are going to use our decorator to do our flowers too... it will be one less vendor we will have to deal with!
